COVID-19 Attendance

About a week before the pandemic struck the US, I took a job at a private college prep school as an Administrative and Facilities Coordinator. Managing the school’s COVID-19 program, policies, and implementation was quickly added to my duties. I wrote and worked with leadership to implement the school’s guidelines for the rest of that year and the next two school years, developed signs to support the rules for the new normal, and coordinated with our county’s public health officials to ensure we stayed up to date.

One of the most challenging parts of the pandemic was supporting parents as they navigated a complex quarantine system. Our county’s policy differed from the state policy, which differed from the CDC’s national guidelines. Calling your kid in sick was suddenly a highly complex process. I identified that a flowchart would be the simplest way to provide parents with the most straightforward information possible. Our county’s public health office distributed this document to three other private schools as a reference and example. As the pandemic evolved, so did the chart to reflect the most recent adaptations to best practices.

I crafted the design, layout, formatting, copy, and editing, with review and minor changes made after consulting with the school leadership and public health. It was created using Adobe InDesign, with colors and fonts selected based on the style guide for the organization. The document is scalable but typically was printed 8.5×11″. I chose InDesign as the program because the format was complex, but the need for the document was finite; I did not think future staff members would need to update it. This document is also available in Spanish.
